In a crowded Washington, D.C., airport, I see several Army soldiers. I am reminded of an incident earlier in the day when a polite young man held a hotel elevator open for me. He was carrying desert sand combat boots while he stood close to a young woman.
"Please," he intently said to me, inviting me to go ahead of him. Please, I thought to myself, pleading with no one in particular, spare this young man; let this war end.

Navy Seaman Recruit Victor A. Lewis recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Illinois. Seaman Recruit Lewis is a 2009 graduate of Sidney Lanier High School in Montgomery, Alabama.
